Closet Organizational Tips to Help You Make the Most of Your Space

Closet space or lack of closet space is probably a better way to put it, always seems to be an issue. It doesn’t matter whether you live in a house or an apartment there never seems to be enough space available in your closets. Here are a couple options to help you make the most of the space you do have.

Go through each closet in your house and make four piles. Your piles are going to consist of items you want to keep, sell, donate or throw away. Just by going through your closets and removing the items you never use, you’ll be surprised at how much extra space you seem to now have. Now that you have your items sorted into the four piles you can decide if some things will be better off in a different location than the closet. For instance if you have seasonal items that aren’t use all that often move them to the garage, basement or even the attic. Once you’ve moved items to different locations you now have room for your day to day items.

Now that you have everything from all your closets sorted it’s time to decide which items will be stored in what closet. This will also help you decide what type of storage unit will work best for you. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself needing a different storage unit for each closet.

Not only will you find that there is a wide variety of closet storage options available, you will also find that there is something that will work for every budget. Once you’ve decided the system that will work best for you, you need to measure your closet space. Once you’ve done this you are now ready to go shopping to purchase the items that will help you get organized.

An adjustable bracket system is one of the cheapest and easiest options available for organizing your closet. Metal rods with slots are hung on the side of the closet and then the support brackets area put where you want shelves. Wood shelves, which are generally used for this type of system, can be sanded, painted or stained. If you don’t want to worry about cutting the wood shelves yourself check with your local lumberyard or home improvement store and more than likely they’ll do it for you.

Another option that is easy and fairly inexpensive is using plastic shelving units that snap together. Obviously this option won’t be as adjustable as the option above but they are sturdy units and take no tools to put together.

The last option we are going to talk about is something of a more permanent nature. You can choose to have organization units that are built right into your closet. These typically are a mixture of all your stand alone type units such as drawers, boxes, clothes rods and shelves.

Organizing your closets, putting them together and maximizing your space isn’t something that will happen overnight. It takes time and effort to implement an organizational system that will work best for you and your family. It’s well worth it in the long run.
