Organizing the Laundry Room

A lot of times if you ask a woman what her least favorite household chore is, you’ll hear her reply laundry. Unfortunately it’s a necessity and can’t be pushed aside or neglected. Having your laundry area organized won’t help make it a more enjoyable task but it will certainly help make your job go a little quicker.

If you decide that setting up a laundry schedule will work best for yourself then it’s important that your family get on board too. Let them know what your schedule is. For example maybe you’ll do whites on Wednesdays or jeans on Saturdays; just let your family know and it’s going to be up to them to do their part. It will be their responsibility to sort the laundry. You can make this task easier on them by using different colored hampers or baskets and teach them what goes where. This will not only be easy for them but it will save you time too. Take it a step further and show them where the stain remover is kept and have it be their responsibility to pre-treat stains before laundry day.

The easiest way to organize your laundry room is going to be to make sure that you have all your laundry soap and fabric softener near the washer and dryer. If your laundry room is lacking storage space it’s fairly easy to build a shelf or even purchase a shelving unit to place near the washer and dryer.

We touched on schedules earlier for what days you will wash what but now we need to talk about the importance of cleaning your dryer vents. You can make a quick schedule for doing this by hanging a calendar or a white board near your dryer.

Another dreaded area of doing laundry is ironing. One simple way to help save time in this area is to make sure you have a clothing rack and a good supply of hangers so that you can take clothes from the dryer and immediately hang them up.

When doing laundry you’ll often come across clothes that need to be fixed or things that you know are too small or out of season. Designate an area in your laundry room and put boxes or baskets there and label them so that you know where to put ‘to be fixed’, ‘too small’ or ‘out of season’ clothes. It will help keep your laundry room organized and de-cluttered. You’ll have to make sure to empty the boxes or baskets on a regular basis.
